Oncology nurses have to know how to deal with pain. They treat and comfort the patients through every stage of cancer. They should be able to address the patients´ questions about surgery complications (if any), chemotherapy effects, nutrition, medications side-effects or any other questions that are cancer -related. They also do additional work that includes coordinating appointments, doing some routine weights, removing sutures and radiotherapy. They basically have to do all the monitoring. There is a certain level of autonomy in the job, but they still have to follow doctors´ orders. Nurses can work in specific areas such as palliative care or bone narrow transplantation, for example. They have to understand that the job is time-consuming and emotionally exhausting.
To fill an Oncology nursing job position must have a Registered Nurse (RN) status after having gotten their BA´s degree. Associate or diploma degrees can also count. They can also obtain their certificate at the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation. To become an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN), they have to get their MA or PHD in Nursing. The salary for Oncology Certified Nurses, although it may vary, it is around $62,000. Oncology Certified Nurse practitioners could reach the sum of $79,000. Nurses can also work as researchers to investigate and explore anything that´s related to the treatment and cure of cancer.
